Ben Tre wax bananas are a unique Vietnamese specialty
Wax bananas (chuối sáp) are a unique specialty of Ben Tre province in Vietnam. Due to their high starch and tannin content, these bananas are typically boiled, steamed, grilled, or fried to improve texture and flavor. Cooking causes the starch to gelatinize, resulting in a soft, chewy, and smooth consistency while reducing astringency and enhancing natural sweetness.
According to Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, a former lecturer at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, the fruit offers several nutritional benefits. It provides approximately 152-167 kcal and 2.28-2.64g of fiber per 100g. The fiber content supports digestive health and intestinal motility. Additionally, the bananas are a source of potassium, which is essential for heart, muscle, and nervous system function, as well as blood pressure regulation. However, due to their significant carbohydrate content, individuals managing weight or blood sugar levels should consume them in moderation.
