Ben Whiteman’s push for Wrexham move sparks clash with Preston

Preston North End captain Ben Whiteman, 30, has signalled a desire to join Wrexham ahead of the 2024‑25 Championship season. Manager Paul Heckingbottom accused Whiteman of “crossing a line” by trying to force the transfer, saying the midfielder told the club he had played his last game and approached Wrexham’s chief Peter Ridsdale.

Heckingbottom, upset by the situation, warned that Whiteman’s actions could create a “sticky situation” for both clubs and noted that Preston have already invested in new signings, including a club‑record £8 million fee for Alfie Devine. Whiteman was omitted from Preston’s preseason defeat to Stockport County, and his future now hinges on whether Wrexham are willing to meet Preston’s valuation.

Wrexham, managed by Phil Parkinson, have identified Whiteman as a key target to bolster their midfield alongside players such as Matty James and Ben Sheaf. The dispute highlights growing frustration within the Preston squad over perceived lack of ambition this summer.
