BenBaso advocates for the preservation of brotherhood archives to protect local history
The BenBaso Association for the Dissemination and Protection of Historical Heritage in Seville has highlighted the critical role of brotherhood archives in recovering and preserving local history. In an article titled ‘Archives: Refuges of Memory’, the entity emphasizes how these documents allow for the reconstruction of forgotten traditions.
Using the town of Marchena as an example, the association noted that a 1726 notary act preserved in the historical archive of the Brotherhood of Cristo de San Pedro provided details about an 18th-century procession. This document revealed previously lost elements of the celebration, such as the arrangement of the procession and the presence of a dance involving ‘diablillos’ (little devils).
BenBaso argues that preserving these documents is essential for understanding ancient devotions, musical expressions, and local customs. The association maintains that recovering cultural manifestations should be based on documented local history rather than external models to ensure the authentic transmission of cultural legacy to new generations.
