Benefits of radish leaves and garden leaf mulch
Radish leaves offer significant nutritional and medicinal value. They contain vitamins A, B, C, and K, as well as minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, phosphorus, and sodium. An infusion made from these leaves can aid digestion, support weight loss, and assist with indigestion or constipation. Additionally, the infusion may improve liver function, act as a cholagogue, soothe coughs, and support the treatment of kidney stones, anemia, and arthritis.
In gardening, leaving fallen leaves in certain areas can support biodiversity. According to Professor Przemysław Bąbelewski from the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, decomposing leaves increase soil humus and improve water retention. Leaf layers also provide essential shelter for insects, butterflies, hedgehogs, and amphibians during winter. While leaves should be removed from manicured lawns to ensure light and air reach the turf, leaving them under trees, shrubs, or in quiet garden corners benefits the local ecosystem.
