Benemérito Cuerpo de Bomberos celebrates 90 years in Nicaragua

The Benemérito Cuerpo de Bomberos de Nicaragua celebrated its 90th anniversary with a ceremony at the Rubén Darío National Theater, featuring rank promotions for various officers including captains, lieutenants, and sergeants.

Head of the Managua Fire Department, Enrique Chavarría, noted that the institution was founded in 1931 by Joaquín Vigil Lejarza following the devastating Managua earthquake. Chavarría highlighted the organization's growth, stating they now employ 2,800 firefighters and operate 454 pieces of equipment, including fire extinction units, ambulances, and rescue gear.

General Commissioner Ramon Landeros described the Nicaraguan fire service as one of the most extensive in Central America, providing coverage across communities, commercial hubs, and forest areas. The anniversary also coincided with the inauguration of Fire Station 242, part of an ongoing expansion of the country's emergency response infrastructure.
