Benevento reintroduces bus services to Corso Garibaldi
The return of bus services to Corso Garibaldi in Benevento has reignited debate regarding the balance between commercial accessibility and the preservation of the city's historic center. Starting this week, the Air Campania 16UB urban line will transit from the Duomo toward the Prefecture, featuring three new stops near via Gregorio VIII, Piazza Roma, and Santa Sofia. The local administration intends for this move to facilitate access to the historic center and support local businesses.
However, the decision has faced criticism from groups such as the Benevento Domani association. Critics argue that introducing vehicle traffic into an area that is part of a UNESCO World Heritage buffer zone—specifically the ‘Longobards in Italy’ site—may conflict with sustainability and pedestrian-focused management plans. Concerns have been raised regarding the protection of historic paving, pedestrian safety, and whether smaller electric shuttles would be a more appropriate solution for the cultural site.
