Italian municipalities face school canteen service disruptions
Multiple Italian municipalities are facing challenges regarding school canteen services, ranging from administrative delays to rising costs and safety concerns.
In Vasto, local councilors have criticized the administration for increasing meal tariffs by up to 40 euros per month for some families while simultaneously delaying service. In Messina, Messina Social City has canceled a tender for canteen services for the 2026/2027 school year, opting instead for a technical extension of the current provider to ensure continuity.
Logistical and bureaucratic issues have caused delays in several other locations. Benevento has postponed its service start to October 13 due to organizational needs, sparking political tension between the administration and the opposition. Sorrento is facing similar delays, with service potentially pushed to late October or even November due to bureaucratic formalities. In San Severo, the start of service at the De Amicis school has been postponed due to safety concerns regarding damaged windows and inadequate repairs.
Conversely, Avola has successfully launched its canteen service alongside new school hours, providing support for families through a dedicated app and validated nutritional menus.
