Benfica proposes major reforms to Portuguese football officiating
Benfica has submitted a comprehensive dossier to the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) proposing significant reforms to the country's football officiating system. The proposals, delivered during a meeting involving club president Rui Costa and FPF officials, advocate for the creation of an autonomous entity to manage professional refereeing, complete with its own budget, direction, and accountability structures.
Key measures within the proposal include the implementation of offside technology and the introduction of financial and career-based consequences for referees who receive negative performance evaluations. The movement UNUM, which aims to contribute ideas for a stronger club, is also involved in presenting these reforms through a framework of six pillars and 17 measures designed to increase independence, reduce conflicts of interest, and enhance the credibility of the officiating sector.
