Benfica’s fan zone opening fully club’s responsibility, says Portuguese police

The Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) announced that the opening of a fan zone outside Estádio da Luz is entirely the responsibility of Sport Lisboa e Benfica. The police will limit their role to maintaining public order and ensuring security for the I Liga match between Benfica and Académico de Viseu.

Benfica announced the fan zone with large screens and food services to let supporters follow the team's season‑opening match despite the stadium being closed to spectators. The closure stems from a 2024 court ruling that imposed a €150,000 fine and a ban on ticket sales after the club failed to meet safety obligations in previous games. The Authority for the Prevention and Combat of Violence in Sport (APCVD) said it was unclear whether the external fan zone would bypass the judicial decision, but the PSP will monitor compliance.
