Bengaluru BWSSB installs IoT devices on borewells for water management
The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has begun installing Internet of Things (IoT) devices on its borewells to transition toward more scientific and data-driven water management. Currently, devices have been installed on 1,800 of the approximately 16,000 borewells under the board's jurisdiction.
The IoT system captures real-time data on critical parameters, including groundwater depth, the quantity of water extracted, and pump operating hours. This information is transmitted to a central system and monitored via dedicated dashboards. BWSSB Chairperson Dr. N. Manjula stated that the goal is to have 6,000 borewells equipped with IoT devices by March 2027.
In future phases, the board plans to integrate the IoT system with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) technology to enhance performance monitoring. The initiative aims to improve operational efficiency by identifying declining water availability, preventing unnecessary pump operation, and reducing equipment damage, such as motors burning out due to dry running. The continuous data collection is intended to help the board understand groundwater conditions and promote more sustainable water utilization.
