Bengaluru clears footpaths and fines illegal banner ads
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced a new footpath policy for Bengaluru that will levy fines of Rs 50,000‑1 lakh on unauthorised flex banners, aiming to improve pedestrian safety and curb visual clutter.
The state launched a 10‑day “Safe Footpath Campaign,” with civic workers clearing encroachments on major roads. The drive removed street‑vendor stalls, metal structures and temporary shelters, prompting protests from vendors and legal challenges from rights activist Vinay Srinivasa, who argues the evictions are unlawful and lack alternative arrangements.
