Mumbai landslide kills at least seven people in Ghatkopar

A massive landslide triggered by heavy monsoon rains struck the Gaushiya Chawl area in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar suburb early Wednesday morning. The collapse occurred around 3:48 am, sending soil, mud, and large boulders onto several row houses while residents were sleeping.

Reports indicate that at least seven people, including three children, were killed in the incident. The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Samir Ansari (14), Sahil Husen Abdul Kazi (19), Aban Arif Shaikh (2), Manat Arif Shaikh (4), Marjina Arif Shaikh (27), Viket Ramesh Yadav (27), and one unidentified adult. At least four others were injured and admitted to Bhabha Hospital in Kurla; their conditions are reported as stable.

Rescue operations involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Mumbai Fire Brigade, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have faced significant challenges due to the extremely narrow access routes to the site, which prevented the deployment of heavy machinery. Officials continue to search for several individuals feared trapped under the debris.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site and announced financial compensation of 4 lakh rupees for the families of the deceased and 50,000 rupees for each injured person. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in Mumbai and surrounding regions.
