Bengaluru electric scooter battery explosion kills 65-year-old man

In the Halasuru neighbourhood of Bengaluru, India, a 65‑year‑old man named Lourdes (Lourd) Nathan died after an electric scooter battery exploded while charging inside his home. The Okinawa scooter, owned by his son Frank Antony, was plugged in around 11 p.m. on May 12 and detonated at about 3 a.m., igniting a fire that caused severe burns to the sleeping victim. He was taken to Bowring Hospital but was pronounced dead en route.

Police have registered an unnatural‑death case and are investigating possible battery overheating, over‑charging, or short‑circuit causes. Forensic experts and the Electrical Inspectorate will examine the scooter and battery system. The incident has revived concerns about charging electric vehicles indoors without proper safety measures.
