Bengaluru faces infrastructure, water, and drought challenges

Bengaluru is experiencing rapid expansion that exceeds current Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) master plans. Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has directed officials to prepare a long-term master plan to provide reliable drinking water, road connectivity, and underground sewerage infrastructure for the entire Bengaluru district. The minister emphasized the need to account for actual urban growth and to implement phased projects with clear timelines, particularly focusing on wastewater treatment and reuse to improve groundwater levels.

In the Bengaluru South district, specifically in Ramanagara and Magadi taluks, a drought is severely impacting agriculture. Rainfall during the southwest monsoon was recorded at 358 mm, significantly lower than the expected 436 mm. This shortage has led to reduced yields and smaller fruit sizes for crops such as silk, ragi, coconut, and mango. Farmers report that delayed flowering in mango trees and a 50 percent reduction in coconut yields are direct consequences of the lack of timely rain.
