Bengaluru police restructuring proposal sparks political debate

The Karnataka government has proposed restructuring the Bengaluru police force by creating five separate commissionerates: Central, North, South, East, and West. Under this plan, the current role of Police Commissioner would be upgraded to ‘Chief Commissioner of Police,’ who would oversee the five new divisions.

Home Minister Priyank Kharge defended the move, citing Bengaluru’s rapid growth—projected at 8.5 percent—and the need to review policing as the city expands. He noted that the proposal would be presented to the cabinet after consulting stakeholders.

Opposition leader R. Ashoka of the BJP has criticized the plan, alleging that the restructuring is driven by financial motives rather than administrative efficiency. He expressed concerns that the move could be detrimental to the police force and claimed that several officers have privately voiced apprehension regarding the proposal.
