Karnataka leaders clash over RSS role and new vehicle fees

Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge and BJP leader R. Ashoka have engaged in a heated political confrontation regarding the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). During Independence Day celebrations, Kharge challenged the RSS to name at least 50 members who participated in India's freedom struggle, contrasting this with the hundreds of Congress members he could list. He also questioned the organization's legal status, suggesting its lack of formal registration prevents it from being banned. In response, B. L. Santhosh and R. Ashoka defended the RSS, asserting that its legitimacy stems from the faith of millions rather than administrative registration and accusing the Congress government of targeting the group for political reasons.

Separately, the Karnataka government has implemented several fee increases affecting vehicle owners. Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate fees have risen, with new rates set at Rs 80 for two-wheelers, Rs 150 for petrol/CNG cars, and Rs 200 for diesel vehicles. Additionally, a proposed parking policy in Bengaluru under the draft GBA Parking Rules 2026 could require residents to pay annual fees ranging from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 for parking on public roads in front of their homes. The BJP has criticized these measures, alleging the government is imposing “taxes on taxes” due to financial shortages.
