Bengkulu authorities intensify wildfire preparedness and legal enforcement

Authorities in Bengkulu, Indonesia, are intensifying efforts to prepare for potential forest and land fires (karhutla) during the current dry season. The Indonesian Forestry Ministry has urged the province to strengthen its preparedness immediately, rather than waiting for the arrival of El Nino or for emergency conditions to manifest.

Haruni Krisnawati, an adviser to the Forestry Minister on climate change, emphasized a principle of ‘early warning followed by early action.’ This includes using hotspot data and weather forecasts to trigger increased patrols, equipment readiness, and field verification. She also highlighted the necessity of securing water sources in fire-prone areas to ensure firefighters have adequate supplies once fires begin.

In tandem with prevention efforts, Bengkulu Police Chief Yudhi Sulistianto Wahid has vowed strict legal action against those responsible for forest and land burning, whether caused by intentional acts or negligence. He stressed that companies operating in the province must take responsibility for their areas, ensuring personnel and equipment are ready. Wahid noted that companies must be held accountable and warned that those failing to coordinate or prepare would face legal consequences.
