Beni faces security concerns following death of civil society leader
The city of Beni in North Kivu is facing heightened security concerns and social distress following several deaths. Katembo Patrick, president of the Société civile du Congo (SOCICO) for the Mambango district, was found dead on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The circumstances of his death remain unclear, and authorities have not yet identified any suspects or motives.
In a separate but related trend of instability, two men were found dead by hanging within a 24-hour period. On August 24, 38-year-old Daniel Muhayirwa was found in the Bungulu commune, and on August 25, a man identified as Kazido was found in the Butanuka district.
Local civil society groups report a rise in suicides in Beni, noting that more than 300 cases of mental health issues were recorded in a single month. Observers attribute this trend to persistent insecurity, economic precariousness, and social tensions affecting the local population.
