Benicarló political group proposes memorial for all Spanish Civil War victims
The political group Compromís per Benicarló has introduced a motion to dedicate a public square or space in Benicarló to the memory of all victims of the Spanish Civil War. The proposal seeks to honor all individuals who suffered violence, persecution, exile, or death, regardless of their ideological, religious, or geographic background.
The initiative follows a recent municipal plenary session where the PP and VOX majority approved naming a street after the Beats Martyrs. Compromís argues that this decision fails to provide equivalent recognition to the broader spectrum of victims of the war and subsequent repression.
The motion arrives as the 90th anniversary of the July 18, 1936, coup d’état and the start of the Spanish Civil War. Proponents state the goal is not to challenge existing memorials but to expand collective memory to include all who suffered, creating a space centered on peace, dialogue, and human rights.
