Benidorm bans multi-passenger electric wheelchairs
The Benidorm City Council has unanimously approved a modification to its municipal mobility ordinance, prohibiting the use of self-propelled wheelchairs designed to carry more than one person on sidewalks and pedestrian zones.
The decision aims to improve road safety and protect pedestrians from conflicts caused by larger, faster-moving electric vehicles. Local officials noted that while these devices are essential for individuals with mobility issues, multi-passenger models are often used for recreational purposes, creating hazards in pedestrian areas.
The new regulation seeks to align local rules with national traffic and road safety legislation, specifically addressing the protection of vulnerable road users. The ban is expected to take effect within 30 days following final approval.
