Benin City faces severe flooding amid political criticism

Benin City is facing persistent and severe flooding that affects all areas of the state capital, including the Government Reserved Area (GRA). Submerged roads and difficult movement have made living conditions increasingly unbearable for residents.

Critics argue that Governor Monday Okpebholo has failed to prioritize this crisis, suggesting the administration is more focused on national political interests, specifically supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election, than on local welfare. Concerns have also been raised regarding political intimidation in Edo State, including reports of threats involving firearms by Edo APC Chairman Jarret Tenebe to influence electoral outcomes.

While previous administrations initiated containment and stormwater projects, the current flooding remains an unresolved existential threat to the city.
