Benin enters global top 100 for economic freedom
Benin has achieved a significant milestone by entering the top 100 in the 2026 Economic Freedom Index published by the Fraser Institute. The country currently ranks 99th globally and holds the 11th position in Africa.
The index evaluates 46 indicators across five key categories: government size, protection of property rights, monetary health, freedom of international trade, and market regulation. Benin's ascent is attributed to reforms involving controlled public spending, enhanced judicial independence, and strengthened private property protections.
Other African nations leading in economic freedom include Mauritius, which ranks 9th globally, followed by the Seychelles and Cape Verde. Benin's performance marks a historic entry into the global top 100 for the West African nation.
