Benin requests return of 35 cultural artifacts from France
Benin has officially requested that France return 35 additional cultural artifacts and historical documents currently held in French collections. The request was raised by President Romuald Wadagni during discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
The requested items include significant pieces such as a carved wooden divination tray held at the Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac Museum, the statue of Gou (a deity of iron and war in the Vodun faith), and the throne of King Toffa of Porto-Novo. The statue of Gou was taken to France during the conquest of Dahomey in the late 19th century.
This move follows the 2021 restitution of 26 royal treasures from Abomey. The current demand is part of a broader effort by Benin to reclaim its history and sovereignty following the colonial era. A preliminary response from Paris is expected in mid-October, which may determine whether the full set of items or only a portion will be returned.
