Cameroon and United States Discuss Future Water and Energy Investment Projects

Cameroon’s Water and Energy Minister Gaston Eloundou Essomba met with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires John G. Robinson in Yaoundé on 24 July 2026 to explore opportunities for American firms in the country’s water and power sectors. The talks covered technical cooperation, industrial partnerships and financing to modernise infrastructure, expand the electricity grid, and improve drinking‑water access. Cameroon plans to add at least 3,500 MW of generation capacity and provide around one million new electricity connections over the next decade, creating demand for U.S. expertise in generation, transmission, renewable energy and related services. The discussion also addressed the nation’s electricity‑sector debt of roughly FCFA 800 billion and the creation of the state‑owned Cameroon Electricity Company (SOCADEL) after the takeover of Eneo’s activities. U.S. companies such as General Electric and Chevron are already present in Cameroon’s energy market, and officials highlighted further private‑sector partnership possibilities.

The meeting followed U.S. statements at the PROMOTE 2026 trade fair in Yaoundé, where Washington signalled a priority on investment, financing and private‑sector collaboration with Cameroon.
