Benin's Pain de Sucre pineapple expands exports to China

Benin is scaling up the export of its 'Pain de Sucre' pineapple, targeting new markets including China. The variety, primarily produced on the Allada plateau in southern Benin, is distinguished by its sweet, low-acid flesh and a characteristic greenish color at maturity.

In October 2020, the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) granted the Pain de Sucre du Plateau d’Allada protected geographical indication (PGI) status. This label links the product's reputation to its specific territory and strict production standards, aiming to increase producer income by focusing on differentiated, high-quality products rather than mere volume.

However, exporters face logistical challenges. The fruit's unique appearance can confuse consumers in markets like Europe who are accustomed to yellow pineapples. Success in these new markets will depend on maintaining consistent quality and managing the delicate logistics required to preserve the fruit during transport.
