Benito Mussolini's Execution and Vatican Document Hunt

On 27 April 1945, Italian partisan forces of the 52ª Brigata Garibaldi captured Benito Mussolini near Dongo on Lake Como as he attempted to flee toward Switzerland with his mistress Claretta Petacci. The following day, Mussolini and Petacci were executed near Villa Belmonte in Mezzegra, an act ordered by the CLNAI to prevent a trial by the Allies. The execution was carried out by Walter Audisio and other partisans, and has since been the subject of extensive historiographical debate.

In January 1946, Allied officials turned to the Vatican for intelligence on twelve boxes of Mussolini‑related documents reportedly stored at the Collegio Gallio. A secret correspondence shows American Captain John Norton meeting Pope Pius XII, after which Vatican Secretary Giovanni Battista Montini wrote to the Bishop of Como confirming the absence of the boxes. The episode highlights the post‑war interplay between the Allies, the Italian resistance, and the Holy See in handling the former dictator’s legacy.
