Benito Taibo defends Radio UNAM spending following allegations
Benito Taibo, director of Radio UNAM, has issued a formal response to allegations regarding his use of university funds for personal-style expenses. In a letter addressed to El Universal, Taibo defended approximately $175,000 MXN in expenditures incurred between January 2024 and April 2026.
Taibo asserts that all spending adheres to the administrative and budgetary policies of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He explained that expenses related to work meetings—including food, lodging, gasoline, and transportation—are authorized under specific institutional guidelines and the 'Clasificador por Objeto del Gasto'. He noted that these expenditures have been audited by the University Comptroller without findings of irregularity.
Addressing specific claims about dining at various restaurants and purchasing items like cakes, Taibo clarified that these were not personal whims. He stated that cakes were purchased to celebrate program anniversaries, such as for 'Jocus Pocus', and shared with audiences during live broadcasts. He maintained that all activities were conducted within the framework of official work meetings.
