Granit Xhaka faces investigation over COVID-19 certificate

Swiss national football team captain Granit Xhaka is under investigation by the Lucerne Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the alleged use of a falsified COVID-19 vaccination certificate. Xhaka has admitted to obtaining a certificate without following standard procedures during the pandemic, describing the decision as a mistake driven by uncertainty and mistrust of the vaccine. He expressed regret and stated his willingness to cooperate with authorities.

Following an agreement with the Swiss Football Association, Xhaka will not participate in upcoming Nations League matches. However, former Swiss international Benjamin Huggel has publicly defended the midfielder, arguing that Xhaka should remain captain unless there are further legal or sporting consequences. Huggel emphasized that the decision regarding leadership should rest with the coach, Murat Yakin, and the squad rather than public opinion, noting that the certificate issue does not impact Xhaka’s leadership or performance on the pitch.

The investigation aims to determine if criminal offenses related to fraud or document falsification occurred. Xhaka is expected to be questioned by authorities in early October.
