Benjamin Mendy details financial struggles following legal acquittal

Former world-record defender Benjamin Mendy, currently playing for the Polish club Pogoń Szczecin, has detailed the financial and personal hardships faced following serious legal allegations. Mendy was accused in 2022 of multiple sexual offenses, including eight counts of rape, but was ultimately acquitted of all charges in two separate legal proceedings.

The legal battles had severe financial consequences. After Manchester City suspended him in August 2021 and ceased salary payments in September 2021, Mendy faced significant debt. He was forced to sell his home in Cheshire to cover legal fees, bills, and child support. During his time in custody, he noted that earning only four pounds per day taught him the value of money, contrasting with his previous lifestyle.

Mendy also revealed that teammates, including Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Riyad Mahrez, provided him with loans to help manage his living expenses and legal costs during the trial. His lawyer stated that the nearly three-year legal process had a profound impact on the player, who is now seeking privacy to rebuild his life.
