Netanyahu reveals direct 2025 phone call with Syrian President al-Sharaa

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revealed that he held a direct phone call with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in July 2025. Speaking at an electoral gathering for the Druze community, Netanyahu claimed the conversation was "short and sharp" and was instrumental in stopping massacres against the Druze population in the Suwayda province.

Netanyahu also referenced Israeli military actions during that period, stating that Israeli forces struck the Syrian Defense Ministry in Damascus and a target within the presidential palace compound. He emphasized his commitment to protecting the Druze community.

Defense Minister Israel Katz suggested that the security situation remains volatile, claiming that President al-Sharaa might resume attacks on the Druze if Netanyahu is not re-elected.

Syrian government sources have not confirmed the call, stating they reject any attempts to politicize the Druze community. The July 2025 violence in Suwayda involved clashes between Druze factions and Bedouin groups, resulting in significant casualties. While the Syrian Human Rights Observatory reported over 2,000 deaths, a Syrian government investigation committee documented at least 1,760 fatalities.
