Zohran Mamdani faces Netanyahu accusations at UN

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is at the center of a diplomatic and political dispute following remarks made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations General Assembly. Netanyahu accused Mamdani of promoting antisemitism and having associations with Hamas, suggesting his leadership endangers the Jewish community in New York.

Mamdani, an avowed anti-Zionist and democratic socialist, rejected these accusations as “baseless lies” intended to sanitize actions in Gaza. While some local officials expressed concern, several prominent Jewish Democrats in New York, including Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal and City Council Speaker Julie Menin, defended the mayor. They characterized Netanyahu’s comments as unhelpful and potentially inflammatory.

Separately, Mamdani has highlighted his ideological alignment with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The two leaders released a viral video using basketball metaphors to discuss the “big shots” and challenges faced by the political left. During a meeting at Gracie Mansion, Mamdani praised Sánchez’s labor policies, including increases to the minimum wage, while Sánchez defended his government’s economic model.
