Benjamin Stambouli announces retirement from professional football
French midfielder Benjamin Stambouli has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. After a 16-year career, the former defensive midfielder shared his decision on social media, stating, “My dream continues,” and expressing a desire to remain involved in the sport, potentially in a coaching or sideline capacity.
Stambouli is widely recognized for his time at FC Schalke 04, where he played 133 competitive matches between 2016 and 2021 after transferring from Paris Saint-Germain. During his tenure in Gelsenkirchen, he experienced significant highs, including a German runner-up finish in 2018, as well as the club's relegation from the Bundesliga in 2021.
Following his departure from Schalke, his career included stints with Adana Demirspor in Turkey, Stade Reims, and FC Metz. With Metz, he successfully achieved promotion to Ligue 1. He was most recently a free agent following the conclusion of his last contract.
