Benjamin Yarbrough enters mental health diversion in bribery case
Benjamin Yarbrough, a 48-year-old former Hayward police officer, has been placed in a mental health diversion program following felony charges of bribery and extortion. The case is currently on hold, and his charges could be dismissed if he successfully completes the required therapy and treatment plan.
According to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, Yarbrough is accused of using his position to protect an illegal brothel in exchange for a $1,000 bribe and free sexual services. Investigators allege he used both personal and work cellphones to arrange encounters and agreed to monitor competitors and warn the business of law enforcement activity.
The investigation originated from a San Jose police probe into human trafficking and pimping involving Yan Qiong Xiong. Forensic reviews of seized mobile devices revealed communications between Yarbrough and Xiong. Yarbrough has since left the Hayward Police Department and surrendered his law enforcement certification.
