COP31 preparations intensify in Turkey ahead of Antalya summit

Preparations are intensifying for the COP31 climate summit, to be hosted by Turkey in Antalya from November 9 to 20, 2026. The summit, co-steered by Australia, will focus on electrification, reducing fossil fuel dependency, and climate finance. Key international actors, including the European Union and Indonesia, are positioning their strategies; the EU aims to extend UN emission reduction programs to 2040, while Indonesia seeks to secure green investments through its national carbon market.

In Turkey, Minister Murat Kurum highlighted significant urban transformation progress, noting that 2,378,000 independent units have been transformed nationwide since 2012, with 1,007,000 completed in Istanbul alone. Additionally, Kurum drew attention to the Benliahmet Station in Kars, where pine saplings planted by railway workers over 55 years ago have grown into a forest, serving as a local symbol of environmental resilience ahead of the summit.

Corporate and academic sectors are also engaging with the COP31 agenda. Türk Telekom has joined as a Master Partner to provide technological infrastructure, and universities in Konya are organizing volunteer programs to involve youth in climate action.
