Bensonhurst residents oppose NYC tree planting over Feng Shui concerns
Residents of the Bensonhurst neighborhood in Brooklyn are expressing concern over a citywide initiative to expand New York City’s tree canopy. The Urban Forest Plan aims to increase green space and reduce heat, with Mayor Mamdani announcing that 18,261 trees have been planted so far in fiscal year 2026.
However, local residents argue that the placement of at least seven new tree beds directly in front of residential doors will disrupt the area’s Feng Shui. Community members stated that the saplings could block positive energy from entering their homes and potentially invite bad luck or sinister spirits. While the city maintains that planting locations were selected based on pedestrian accessibility, underground utilities, and traffic infrastructure, some neighbors say the new trees will negatively impact their sense of peace and comfort.
