Benue State faces controversy over federal pilot ranching project

The Nigerian Federal Government’s decision to include Benue State in a pilot ranching programme intended to modernize livestock production and mitigate farmer-herder conflicts has sparked significant controversy. Major socio-cultural organizations in Benue, including Mdzough U Tiv, Ochetoha k’Idoma, and Omi Ny’Igede, have expressed reservations. They argue that addressing insecurity and the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their ancestral lands must take priority over land allocation for ranching.

Representatives of these groups stated they do not oppose modern animal husbandry but insist that any programme must be voluntary, community-driven, and implemented through extensive dialogue to avoid dispossessing local communities. They emphasized that Benue’s security is vital to national food security.

In response to the backlash, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia clarified that the Federal Government does not intend to force ranching upon the state or its people. Alia urged residents to remain calm, stating that his administration is committed to protecting local interests and will not impose policies against the wishes of the communities. He also noted that the state is exploring various livestock opportunities, such as sheep and goat production, for economic development.
