Benue State faces history of political instability and attacks on governors

Benue State, often referred to as Nigeria’s ‘food basket,’ faces a history of political instability and security challenges. Since the return to democracy in 1999, every sitting governor of the state has been targeted in armed attacks. Notable incidents include a 2004 attack on former Governor George Akume’s convoy, which resulted in the death of a former Nigerian Airways managing director, and an attack on former Governor Gabriel Suswam by suspected herdsmen.

Currently, Governor Hyacinth Alia is working to address long-standing issues of underdevelopment and political interference. Alia has pledged to combat corruption and ‘godfatherism’—the influence of powerful political figures—to promote transparency and accountability. Former Governor Gabriel Suswam has expressed support for Alia’s administration, noting that the current leadership faces similar political pressures and interference that have hindered previous administrations in the state.
