BepiColombo mission enters critical Mercury arrival phase
The BepiColombo mission, a joint venture between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), is entering a critical arrival phase at Mercury after an eight-year journey. On September 3, 2026, the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM) is scheduled to separate from the two scientific orbiters: the European Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and the Japanese Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (Mio).
The spacecraft faces extreme environmental challenges, including temperatures ranging from -180°C to 450°C and solar radiation up to ten times stronger than on Earth. Following the initial separation, the orbiters are expected to enter Mercury's orbit in November 2026. A second complex maneuver will occur in December 2026, when the MPO and Mio will separate from each other to begin their respective orbital paths. The full scientific mission is slated to commence in April 2027.
The mission aims to study Mercury's magnetic field, surface, and interior to better understand the evolution of rocky planets. The total cost of the mission is estimated at 1.7 billion euros.
