Beppu City Council addresses rising juvenile delinquency and safety

The Beppu City Youth Problem Council held its first meeting for the 2026 fiscal year on August 31 at the city hall. During the session, 22 new committee members were appointed to support the healthy development of local youth.

Reports from the Beppu Police Station and the School Education Division highlighted a rising trend in juvenile delinquency since 2023, specifically noting an increase in initial offenses such as shoplifting and bicycle theft. Regarding traffic safety, pedestrian-vehicle accidents account for 20% of total incidents, with a high frequency among second-grade elementary students and younger.

The council also reviewed community safety efforts, including reports from 'Beppu-ko Anshin Supporters' regarding suspicious person sightings and guidance provided to students. Future initiatives will focus on human rights education, improving school commuting routes, and enhancing community-led crime prevention activities.
