Berlin and Hamburg transport hubs face security incidents
On Thursday, September 3, 2026, two separate security incidents occurred at major German transport hubs.
At Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), a hazardous materials alert was triggered after a woman informed federal police at a service point that she was carrying toxic substances in her handbag. This led to the partial evacuation of Terminal 1 and the temporary disruption of rail services between Schönefeld and the airport. Emergency responders, including fire services from the Dahme-Spreewald district, arrived in protective gear to investigate the substance. The woman was taken into custody. By late Thursday evening, authorities declared the situation safe and reopened the terminal, noting that no immediate danger was found. Flight operations returned to regular schedules by Friday morning.
Separately, at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, a large police operation was launched after a suitcase was found abandoned and secured to a pillar with a bicycle lock near tracks 11 and 12. After an investigation by bomb disposal experts, the suitcase was found to contain only ordinary travel items. A 20-year-old man later identified himself as the owner and was released following a preventive discussion and notification regarding potential costs for the police operation.
