Berane municipality boosts Roma and Egyptian child enrollment in schools
The local government of Berane reported a steady rise in the number of children from Roma and Egyptian (RE) communities enrolling in early childhood and primary education. For the 2026/2027 school year, 70 RE children will attend the "Radmila Nedić" kindergarten, up from 38 the previous year. In the municipality’s primary schools, "Radomir Mitrović" and "Vuk Karadžić", a total of 25 RE pupils are enrolled, while seven RE students entered secondary schools. Overall, about 200 RE children are now attending primary education in Berane, the majority at "Radomir Mitrović".
Mayor‑appointed secretary Miloš Raković said the increase is driven by a local action plan for Roma and Egyptian social inclusion, which prioritises education. The municipality provides financial support, covers transport from settlements to schools, and supplies school materials, textbooks and clothing. Partnerships with the Association for Support of Roma and Egyptians and direct outreach to families help remove logistical barriers and encourage early socialisation through kindergarten attendance.
