Berane residents face winter without central heating

Residents of Berane, Montenegro, face another winter without central heating, relying instead on expensive wood, pellets, or electricity. Despite long-standing promises of city-wide heating infrastructure, the project remains unfulfilled.

Local community leader Petar Labudović noted that the high cost of heating materials is placing a significant strain on household budgets. Currently, beech wood is priced at 70 euros per meter, oak at 80 euros, and pellets have reached 350 euros per ton.

Plans for a heating plant utilizing biomass and waste have been discussed for decades, including feasibility studies and consultations with Elektroprivreda Crne Gore and the University of Belgrade. However, the promised infrastructure, including hot water services and recycling centers to support the plant, has yet to be implemented.
