Berg Glacier retreats from Berg Lake on Mount Robson

The Berg Glacier on the north face of Mount Robson has retreated so far that it no longer reaches the waters of Berg Lake. This separation means the glacier is no longer calving icebergs directly into the lake, a change that researchers describe as a vivid indicator of climate change.

Joseph Shea, an associate professor of geography at the University of Northern British Columbia, confirmed the separation after observing the glacier during fieldwork this summer. While the retreat may change the lake's appearance by reducing the number of floating icebergs, experts do not expect a dramatic decline in water levels, as snow and ice melt from higher elevations continue to feed the watershed.
