Berg Propulsion to open Mumbai hub for Indian shipbuilding market

Berg Propulsion is expanding its presence in India by establishing a new office in Mumbai, scheduled to open on January 1, 2027. The facility will serve as a central hub to support the country’s growing shipbuilding market and existing partnerships with major yards, including Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), and Chowgule Shipyard.

The Mumbai operation will be led by General Manager Amrita Singh, supported by Prasenjit Roy, a former Indian Navy Commander and Program Manager at GRSE. The company aims to capitalize on the increasing demand for green propulsion technologies, such as hybrid configurations, variable speed drives, and controllable-pitch propeller (CPP) systems, as Indian shipyards prioritize efficiency and emission reductions.

In addition to the new office, Berg Propulsion plans to develop a service agent network in Mumbai, Kochi, and Visakhapatnam. The expansion also includes local recruitment and training programs to bolster service capabilities. The company is currently supplying propulsion packages for two 33.55-meter electric tugs at KMEW Group’s Mumbai facility and views the Mumbai hub as a potential base to support customers across South Asia, including Sri Lanka.
