Bergama artisans preserve ancient parchment making tradition

In Bergama, the traditional craft of parchment making is being preserved by a new generation of artisans following the passing of a master craftsman. The 93-year-old master, who was recognized in Turkey’s National Inventory of Living Human Treasures, died in May.

His apprentices continue to use ancient, chemical-free methods to transform animal skins into writing surfaces. The process involves soaking goat skins in lime pits, manually removing hair, and smoothing the material through hand-craftsmanship. These handmade parchments are used for calligraphy, painting, and miniature art, serving as a living historical legacy of the region.
