Bergamo Court rejects new DNA testing in Yara Gambirasio case
The Court of Assize of Bergamo has rejected a request from the defense of Massimo Bossetti to conduct new forensic analyses on evidence related to the murder of Yara Gambirasio. The decision does not alter Bossetti’s 2018 life sentence.
Defense attorneys Claudio Salvagni and Paolo Camporini had contested the methodology used to extract DNA from sample ‘31G20’, which was central to the conviction. The defense also raised questions regarding other genetic traces and suggested that certain traces on the victim's clothing, which they believe are compatible with seminal fluid, had not been sufficiently analyzed.
In its ruling, the court stated that the genetic profile known as ‘Ignoto 1’ was not derived solely from sample 31G20 but from multiple other samples. Judges noted that 16 out of 52 samples taken from the victim's underwear and two out of 12 samples from her leggings yielded the genetic profile attributed to Bossetti. The court concluded that the existing data did not justify further testing, as new analyses were unlikely to provide elements useful for a sentence revision.
