Bergheim-Rheidt substation attack: New details released
Police and prosecutors have released new details regarding a targeted attack on a substation in Bergheim-Rheidt. According to Michael Esser, a senior criminal director, the incident occurred around 8:00 PM and caused a short circuit.
The method of attack involved using launching devices, likely utilizing pyrotechnics, to position a wire over high-voltage lines and attach it to a fence to create a ground connection. Investigators discovered six such launching devices in a nearby cornfield. The resulting short circuit caused the wire to burn up and damaged the substation fence.
As a consequence of the attack, power plant blocks in Niederaußem and Neurath had to be shut down. However, authorities noted that the electrical grids remained stable, and the attack did not result in any significant or large-scale power outages in neighboring towns or cities.
