Bergneustadt initiates public survey on wind turbine expansion

In Bergneustadt, local authorities have approved an informal public survey to gauge citizen opinion regarding the construction of wind turbines on the Beulberg and Laubberg. The survey, running from October 5 to October 25, focuses on three potential sites where the city and the Oberbergischer Kreis may have influence. The proposal follows intense debate over the potential installation of up to seven turbines, some reaching heights of 250 meters.

Opposition groups, including the UWG, have raised concerns regarding nature conservation, economic benefits, and the potential loss of legal maneuvering room if lease agreements are signed prematurely. Critics also argue that the current power grid lacks the necessary capacity and storage to handle such an influx of energy.

In a broader regional context, the Ikom Stiftland association recently discussed the expansion of renewable energies. Representatives from Bayernwerk noted an expected disproportionate increase in wind turbines across Bavaria, particularly in Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate. However, local mayors have called for a faster expansion of the electricity grid to support the energy transition and meet rising demand.
