Bering Air Flight 445 crash blamed on overload and severe icing

Federal investigators concluded that the February 6, 2025 crash of Bering Air Flight 445, which killed all ten people aboard, resulted from a combination of severe in‑flight icing and the aircraft being significantly overweight. The Cessna 208B Caravan took off from Unalakleet with a gross weight about 991 pounds above the limit for known icing conditions, and flight‑data reviews showed a pattern of overweight operations at Bering Air.

The NTSB report also found that the pilot, Chad Antill, failed to maintain adequate airspeed while managing the ice‑protection system, leading to a stall and loss of control as the plane descended toward Nome. At the time, Nome Airport’s runways were temporarily closed for de‑icing, and air‑traffic control advised a reduced speed. The agency also criticised the Federal Aviation Administration for inadequate oversight that failed to detect Bering Air’s routine overweight flights.

In response, the NTSB recommended additional pilot training on loss‑of‑control recovery, broader use of flight‑data monitoring, and stricter load‑manifest requirements for Part 135 operators.
