Beringen, Switzerland Faces Opposition Over Mega Data Center Consuming 75% of Canton Power

A planned mega‑data centre in Beringen, in the canton of Schaffhausen, is set to be built by the U.S. firm Stack Infrastructure with completion slated for 2028. Estimates suggest that at full capacity the facility could use up to 75% of the canton’s electricity, sparking strong environmental concerns.

Local residents have formed a collective to protest the project, joining a broader wave of opposition to large data‑centre developments across Europe and the United States. Similar movements have led New York State to ban new centres exceeding 50 MW for a year, and other countries such as France, Ireland, Chile, Spain and Japan have seen protests or moratoria on comparable projects.
